Shay had a stint in Girl Guides as part of weekly activities for school. She attended the World Thinking Day with other girls from a number of international schools here in Shanghai. The slogan was "Together We Can Change The World" and the girls participated in various activities related to saving the planet. They got to design a water filtration unit from just a plastic water bottle, sand and pebbles (not sure I would have
drunk tha
t water!) and tried to shop
for a family on 50RMB per week. There were some interesting choices (like some of the girls buying a chocolate bar for the week for a family of 4). The highlight of my day of course was my girl being chosen to present the organiser with a bunch of flowers up on the stage. Shay has come a long way in such a short time and is now a real risk taker with being on centre stage. Proud Mama moment!! Unfortunately, Girl Guides has been cancelled at the school - it is a huge commitment for a volunteer to undertake the organisation of all the girls and attend various functions and to be awarded badges etc. The wonderful mother at our school who volunteered has relocated to her home country (something we are getting quite used to unfortunately) and there was no one to step up to take over which is a real
shame. Maybe next year!!
